Blue Badge Holders – A Small Step in the Right Direction but More to Do

Islington Liberal Democrats are glad that the Council is finally listening to residents and intends to allow some limited exemptions to camera filters in LTNs. We welcome this more flexible approach to address the needs of the more vulnerable amongst us.

A relatively small number of vehicles being allowed to pass through camera filters should not remove the overall benefits of LTNs.

Disability campaigners have been calling for exemptions since these schemes were first introduced. We have backed those calls for several months now.

Problems with Labour’s proposal remain. For example, it makes no provision for carers or for those supporting disabled residents. It is also a pity that the Blue Badge exemption will not apply immediately across Islington and that it will be many months before some disabled residents can benefit from the change.

Since many council vehicles are allowed to pass through camera filters without being fined, it seems only fair that the disabled and those caring for them should enjoy the same freedom. We urge the Council to listen carefully to disability groups to ensure that a more beneficial disability exemption is agreed as soon as possible.
