Meet Flora:

Our neighbourhood is being completely re-built, with 36 redevelopment sites identified by the Council. I want to make sure the Council hears what we think about their plans. That’s not going to happen if we elect another Labour Councillor to this Labour dominated Council.

That’s why I’ve decided to run in the upcoming by-election - I want to stand up for this neighbourhood.

I love EC1. I’ve lived around here most of my life. I grew up just off City Road, and have lived just off Old Street for the last 13 years. There’s always a lot of buzz and bustle, but there’s also a gentle, live-and-let-live community. There’s no typical EC1 resident, and everyone’s welcome,

We’re ringed by the City, Clerkenwell, the Angel and “Sillicon Roundabout”, so it’s not surprising that the Council wants 80% of the new buildings in our area to be offices. But they haven’t asked us what we would like to see more of in our neighbourhood.

This massive re-development plan should be talked about, rather than hidden away in technical planning documents in a hard-to-reach corner of the Council website. I want to make sure we can all get involved.

I live with my family in Banner Estate (one of the 36 redevelopment sites). My daughters go to Prior Weston primary school and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson secondary school. I went to Hugh Myddelton primary, Islington Green secondary (now COLAI) and City and Islington College. When I was growing up my mum was a Labour Councillor for neighbouring St Peter’s ward. I’ve voted Labour and Liberal Democrat over the years, but in 2018 I decided to join the Liberal Democrats because of what we stand for:

The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity... We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.
