Islington Liberal Democrats are celebrating gaining over 100 new members in the last week after a more than 11,000 surge in Lib Dem members nationally to over 56,000.
Islington has seen the 5th highest growth of all local Lib Dem parties across the country and now has over 350 members – close to the high watermark of ‘Cleggmania’ in 2010.
Chair of Islington Liberal Democrats Nick Manners said:
“It’s clear that just days after the election, the Liberal Democrat fightback has already begun. I’d like to welcome all of our 100 new members. Their enthusiastic support will help us target a raft of council seats locally in 2018 and return some true liberal voices to Islington who can stand up against this uncaring Conservative government and the arrogant Labour council.
“Absent the staying hand of the Liberal Democrats the new Tory government have already set themselves against some of the most vulnerable people in the country. They plan to scrap the Human Right sAct and undermine our social safety net with £12Bn of drastic welfare cuts.
“This surge in new members shows that despite the disappointing election result we’re on track for a Lib Dem revival here in 2018”
