Santander Cycles

Islington Lib Dems passionately advocate cycling as a way to improve our city’s health, wellbeing and reduce pollution. Our activists are campaigning to bring the TfL Santander Cycles scheme across Islington.

Of all London boroughs, Islington has the second highest percentage of people who use bikes as a main form of commute, according to the most recent census. It seems obvious that this scheme should be rolled out across the borough, which is both a prominent destination for office workers, shoppers and sports fans and a strongly residential area.

Yet, Islington users of the Santander Cycles scheme cannot travel within the borough for lack of provisions north of Islington Green.

In July 2017, seven new docking stations have been installed across Brixton. This expansion follows the installation of eight docking stations at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in 2016. In 2016 the Santander scheme saw an unprecedented 10.3m hires - 4.4 per cent up on 2015. 2017 seems set to beat the year-on-year records for the number of journeys made.

In Islington, docking stations are particularly required near tube and train stations to facilitate access to public transport. Unfortunately, no such docking station features on the current plans for the Highbury Corner improvement.
