Islington Liberal Democrats question the lack of information from Islington Council following the take-over by Centrica.
More than 24 hours after the announcement that Centrica was buying Robin Hood Energy, the distressed parent company of Islington’s Angelic Energy, there is still no information from the Council about the implications for the many thousands of Islington residents who are customers of the not-for-profit energy provider.
“It’s all very strange.” said Islington Liberal Democrat spokesperson Kate Pothalingam “The Council website continues to encourage residents to sign up for Angelic Energy as if nothing has happened. But Robin Hood Energy on its own website makes it clear that all customers of Angelic will be transferred to British Gas – the trading name for Centrica - in the near future.
“The Council really needs to ask itself whether it should be involved in this sort of commercial endeavor. When Angelic Energy was established, [Council Leader] Richard Watts described it as ‘a people’s energy company’ which would stop people being “ripped off by the Big Six”. Now it seems that all the people the Council encouraged to switch to Angelic will end up in the arms of the biggest of the Big Six.
“Richards Watts really needs to make a statement on this urgently. In the past, the Council has claimed Angelic was a money-maker. What’s the situation now? Given the collapse can the Council assure us that local tax payers have not incurred losses?”
